  JOHN LOWE’S CHARITY NIGHT 23RD.FEBRUARY.2008

The Ambassador restaurant in Paphos was the place to be for all dart lovers and players on Saturday night. Floris the Chef and Owner catered for 200+ with a superb hot & cold buffet and his staff looked after everyone to make the night go without a hitch. The music was supplied by Spiros’s international singers, bouzouki band and Cypriot dancers.                                                                                               The evening started at 6.30 with music and vocals provided by Ian Clark who continued to play whilst everyone tucked into the buffet.

Vic made the draw for the eight players from our members to play John.                                               Terry held an auction for the two other places which raised 250 euro with Charles Turrell from Aces Bar successfully bidding 120 euro and Tony “Bandana” Croxford  from The Sea Horse 130 euro both beating off bids from the air force lads from Akrotiri.                                                                                 All the players were given time to warm up on the practice board provided. During which time the audience were entertained by the Bouzouki band.

After short introduction by Bernard, who thanked our sponsors, those who contributed to the raffle and others who had loaned equipment listed below, he then introduced John who entered the stage through smoke to his theme tune of “Smoke on the Water”                                                                                  John, at his request, had visited a few pubs and clubs and played a few games against local players and therefore had formed a good relationship with a majority of the audience before the evening had started                                                                                                                                                                  He began with a short speech and some comical anecdotes to get everyone relaxed. The audience played their part in the proceedings and the rapport between them and John helped to create a wonderful atmosphere.

The Caller, Michael Hughes from Alexander’s Bar then started the Exhibition by announcing “Lets Play Darts” receiving a stony glare from John who he found out later hates that phrase.                    After John’s short practice on the Stage Dart Board, David Moleneux from the Rugby Arms, was the first player announced to play 701.                                                                                                               He was followed by Lynn Prosser from The Sea Horse, Brian Young from Aces Bar, Terry Ford from Ithaki darts club, Dave Harris from the Latin community centre, Will Kneale from the Phoenix club, Neofytos Eleftheriou from Cockatoo’s and Carl Wood from Aces bar.                                                       All players enjoyed their game with John, but unfortunately none were able to beat him.

One of the players who had played John during his visit was Charles who said that John had beaten him because of a dodgy scorer and asked for a rematch which was declined so when his name was announced John greeted him and announced that this time he would play without a supposedly dodgy scorer and hit his only 180 of the night in defeating him.                                                                Bandana from the Sea Horse was next to the oche. An entertaining game followed with banter from both competitors and the audience but again John came out the winner.

Lorraine McCormack from the Sea Horse, our ladies champion of last year played well but went the same way as all the above by loosing to John.

The only player to beat John  was our men’s champion of last year Graeme Poynter from the Frog & Toad “A” in a very close match.

After the darts John held a question and answer session and the last question was asked by Sean Smithurst from the Mesogi arms “B” who was asked to come onto the stage where John presented him with a Unicorn shirt provided by them which John later signed and had his photograph taken.

The music then continued and John signed autographs on anything people could lay their hands on and had his photograph taken with a great number.

A five euro collection was made and 300 euro was raised and one of the audience was asked to draw one note from the pot for the winner to receive 150 euro. The member of the audience was selected at random and Rosemary Kneale  embarrassingly pulled out a note bearing her own name but at least it was not one of the committee.

The music continued to play and a couple of Cypriot dancers performed their glass balancing act and traditional dances and it was not long before they had the audience dancing round the restaurant.

The raffle then took place followed by an auction for a Phil Taylor shirt which raised a further 150 euro.

The chairman presented John’s wife Karen with a bouquet of flowers from the committee.

The music and dancing continued until 1am when the audience left well fed and watered,or something stronger, having enjoyed a wonderful evening of darts and entertainment.

The total amount raised during the night was 2013 euro which will be equally divided between St.Michaels Hospice,Paphiakos animal welfare and PAWS.
